Computer Literacy is Key for Many Students with Disabilities But… • General education computer teachers are often ill-equipped to work with students with disabilities, especially information processing and intellectual disabilities. • Other teachers may not be fully computer literate themselves • Individualized instruction often falls to paraprofessionals.

  3. A Lack of Appropriate Curricula • Need to be able to individualize pace and content • Need to interface with assistive technology • Need to be able to use non-specialist teachers • Need to have the option of starting at the very beginning • Need concrete, relevant outcomes along the way

Our dream • Computer/Internet skills developed to maximum levels for all students. • Open access to adaptive/specialized equipment for all students. • Preparation of teachers to support students with disabilities in use of computers and the Internet. • Support services for teachers, students, and families

  5. Our current focus • Curriculum to teach basic skills to people with intellectual disabilities • Curriculum that can be adapted for use in general education settings, small groups, and individual instruction and self-instruction • Supporting materials for on-going computer/Internet use • Supporting materials regarding access enhancing equipment and software

  6. 4 Curriculum Modules • Computer Basics • Internet Browsing • Email • Internet Safety

  7. Our First Attempt: The On-Ramp Funded by the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities • A response to demand from adults with disabilities • Intended for use in small group and individualized settings • Web-based • Intended to launch graduates to use email and surf the Web.

  8. Features • Accessible lessons (PowerPoint and video) • Supplemental materials: • Cheat sheets • Extra “how to’s” • Resource Links • Discussion Group (email) • Glossary • Audio options
