Alkanes The Alkanes are the simplest hydrocarbons. Most Alkanes come from crude oil. The formula for an Alkane is CnH2n+2. • They are insoluble in water. • They will carry out combustion. • They have poor chemical reactivity. • They are described as saturated.
Alkenes Alkenes are hydrocarbonsthat contain a single double bond. Alkenes will de-colourise bromine water. The formula for Alkenes is CnH2n. • Alkenes are more reactive than Alkanes - their double bond can be broken. • Alkenes are described as unsaturated. • They will combust. • They are insoluble in water.
Cracking Crude oil doesn’t contain enough small molecules used for fuels, so cracking is a process used to break down large molecules into smaller ones. • Cracking needs: • High temperature. • High pressure. • A catalyst - To help speed up the chemical reaction.
