What is the Schlieffen Plan? • It was a plan that ensured a quick “42 day” victory over France before their ally, Russia, could complete its mobilization • The plan was created by count Alfred Von Schlieffen and modified by Helmuth Von Moltke the younger
Schlieffen Plan Continued • The Eastern Front was Russia. The Western Front was the French • This was the German plan to avoid a two front war by concentrating the troops in the West and quickly defeating the French • Then, if necessary, rush the troops to the East to face Russia before they had time to mobilize
Why the Schlieffen Plan didn’t work • Mainly, the whole German plan was based on assumptions. • It was thought that Russia would take at least six weeks to mobilize. In reality Russia mobilized in just ten days. • With the quick Russian mobilization, Germany was forced to take troops from France to defend their self.
