  2. Sentences have two parts SUBJECT Noun or Pronoun Answers: Who or what? He Autumn leaves The park district PREDICATE Verb Answers: What about it? smiles. twirls gently to the ground. will open an ice skating rink.

  3. Example Sentence: The happy, cheerful student walked down the hallway.

  4. A Complete Subject is… • The noun or pronoun and all the words around it. • Example: The happy, cheerful student

  5. A Simple Subject is… • The main noun or pronoun in the complete subject • Example: The happy, cheerful student • Student is the simple subject • The happy, cheerful student is the complete subject

  6. Practice • Find the simple subject within the complete subject. • The big green plant fell from the ceiling. • The old books sat on the metal shelves. • Our teachers are helping us study.

  7. A Complete Predicate is… • The verb and all the words around it. • Example: walked down the hallway.

  8. A Simple Predicate is… • The main verb or verb phrase in the complete predicate. • Example: walked down the hallway • Walked = simple predicate • Walked down the hallway = complete predicate

  9. Practice • Find the simple predicate within the complete predicate. • The big green plant fell from the ceiling. • The old books sat on the metal shelves. • Our teachers are helping us study.

  10. A compound subject is… • Two or more subjects joined by the conjunction and. • Example: Mr. Acker and Miss Lutz are the teachers.

  11. Practice • Identify the compound subject • Raines and Jada are laughing. • Randy and some students are working on Haunted Hallway. • The class and their teacher are reviewing grammar.

  12. A Compound Predicate is… • Two or more predicates joined by the conjunction and. • Example: Mr. Acker teaches English and coaches football.

  13. Practice • Identify the compound predicate • The student read their book and wrote an essay. • The football team practices and wins. • I ran a mile and took a nap.
