London 2012 -the answers • 9.3 billion -cost of London 2012 in £’s (14.5 US) • 496 million -cost of Olympic stadium in £’s (790 US) • 9.6 million -number of tickets for sale for Games • 250,000 -number of spectators each day at the Park • 80,000 -capacity of the Olympic stadium • 21,000 -number of journalists at the Games • 17,000 -number of athletes in the Athletes Village • 2,800 -number of new homes in the Athletes Village • 200 -number of buildings demolished in the Park

The legacy of previous Games Barcelona, 1992 • It was an industrial port in decline, like east London • The Olympics kick-started regeneration in Barcelona • Estimated 20,000 permanent jobs were created • Manufacturing fell but services grew, especially tourism • By 2005, Barcelona had recovered cost of Olympics

IMPACT SO FAR Stratford City (Westfield) • Opened Sept 2011 • The largest urban shopping mall in Europe • 300 shops, including 70 food outlets, a casino, cinema, hotel and offices • 10,000 new jobs
Economic Legacy • East London has faced long- term economic decline • Manufacturing industry in the Lea Valley has gone • 5,000 more jobs were lost in 2007 with the Olympic Park • Where are new jobs from the Olympics going to come from?
The Media Centre • 20,000 of the world’s media will come in 2012 • It is likely to provide most jobs at the Park, post-2012 • The aspiration is for creative and cultural industries to invest
Social legacy • The Athletes Village will provide 2,800 new homes, post-2012 • Half of the homes will be ‘affordable’ • The other half will be for private rent • The Village will have a new academy and other community facilities In Sydney house prices rose and promise of affordable homes was broken • So far, this has not happened in east London
Environmental legacy • Stunning venues and architecture • Stadium is likely to be used by a football (soccer) club • Aquatics Centre for community use and elite sports Over 100 hectares of green open space • 6.5 km of restored river and canals • New bridges, cycle and walking routes to connect east London
