Women in the workforce 1943(ish) • Rosie the Riveter • Women were needed in factories during wartimes • This was done out of patriotism. • Rosie the Riveter was wartime propaganda. • This was the seedlings of the beginning of the women’s movement. • From 1940-1944 women in the work place rose to 20 million. After the war women were forced to lower paying jobs paving the way to EEO.

Sputnik 1 1957 • Oct. 4th 1957 • Soviets announced the launching of the 1st space orbit satellite. • It was an atmospheric detection satellite. • This began a HUGE Space Race between the USA and the Soviets. Dealt with the Cold War.
Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 • October 1962 • JFK and Nikita Khrushchev (Soviet Union) wrestling over the placing of Nuclear Missiles in Cuba. • Almost brought the USA and Soviets to WW III • This was ongoing tension during the Cold War.
1968 Olympics “Fists of Freedom” • Tommie Smith 1st Place • John Carlos 3rd Place • 200 Meters • Represents black pride • Both were shoeless to highlight poverty among African Americans. • Beads around Carlos neck represent all those who have been killed from oppression. • YouTube - Black History: 1968 Olympics
