University of Palestine Faculty of Applied Engineering & Urban Planning Dept. of Architecture, Interior Design & Planning Theories of Architecture(EAPS4202) Lecturer 15 Theories & Manifestoes of Contemporary Architecture (Part 2/2) Critical Reasoningbased examples Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 19.05.2009
Evaluating Arguments (Design & Theory) Putting all together as a summary based on lecturer 14, there are six steps adopted to evaluate & judge arguments associated with architectural design & theory. • Preliminary step • Identification of any explicit premises or conclusions • Identifying implicit premises • Determining whether the conclusion follows • Whether the premises should be accepted or rejected • Consider giving a charitable interpretation in case the conclusion does not follow or the premises are unacceptable • Additional step of considering why the argument may have seemed persuasive (Argument is rejected) Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 19.05.2009
Organic Architecture • The building achieves the placement of man in relation to nature. Putting the occupants in a close relationship to the glen, the trees, the foliage & wild flowers. • The glory of the natural surroundings is accentuated, brought in, and made a component of daily life. • The vertical elements of the house are constructed in native stone. Horizontal elements are by the construct of concrete. Falling Water, Bear Run, USA, Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 19.05.2009
Organic Architecture • Wright focused on the relationships between building & their environment (form, function & the relationship between man & nature); • the continuity between inner & outer spaces; • the coherence of parts of the buildings and the whole, and has paid much respect to building materials. Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 19.05.2009
Critical Reasoning • Based on the description of organic architecture describe your criticism identifying premises & conclusion. • Does the conclusion follow? • Are the premises accepted? & why? • What are the steps adopted to do the criticism? Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 19.05.2009

Conclusion 1. Form is determined by functional & constructional efficiency (form follows function, form follows behavior & form follows construction) • 2. Form follows context. • Factors of key influence are: • site’s architectonic & urban design characteristics • Geographical context (location from city centre, socio-cultural context , historical context, legal one including legislation & regulations, & economic context. 3. Form is autonomous that is not derived from users or construction, but rather from geometrical principles Factors influencing form Prepared by Dr. Hazem Abu-Orf, 19.05.2009
