Defining “Environment” • The circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded. • The complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival • The aggregate of social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community

Defining “Justice” • the maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments • the quality of being just, impartial, or fair • the principle or ideal of just dealing or right action, conformity to this principle or ideal

Environmental Justice cont… • Environmental Protection Agency (USA): “the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.“ • People involved in the EJ movement generally view the environment as encompassing "where we live, work, and play" ('pray' and 'learn)

  4. Environmental Justice (EJ): • EJ combines issues of social justice and the environment • EJ asks: What are the social impacts of various environmental hazards ? Who lives there? Whose voices are heard? Whose voices are silenced? I.e. landfills, toxic waste sites, industrial facilities, etc. • Environmental Justice movement intersects with various social justice movements

Environmental Justice: • Distinction: • Environmental equity: Poison people equally. • A common government response • Environmental justice: Stop poisoning people, period. • EJ movement response • Environmental racism is the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards on people of color. Environmental justice is the movement’s response to environmental racism.
