  2. Keep in mind… • Many of these contributions did not come directly from Arabs or Muslims, Arabic was the “official language of learning”. • Rich heritage of intellectual thought includes contributions of many ethnicities & cultures of SW Asia & N. Africa.

  3. Islamic Empire • Flourished from 7th century to 13th century AD • Known as the “Arab age of Enlightenment” • Through trade, wars, & conquests other parts of the world were expose to the ideas and philosophy of the Arab world.

  4. Contributions made to… • Arts • Sciences (math, geography) • Literature • Medicines • Music • Food productions • Language • Cosmetics • Misc. items such as candy, checkers, bowling, beds, chairs, mirrors. Glass

  5. More contributions… • 3 major & lasting institutions strictly of Arab origin…”university, observatory, & hospital”.

  6. How? • Arabic scholars translated Greek, Persian & other scientific texts into Arabic • Combining this knowledge with Arab scientific inquiry of the times
