The very first roller coasters • The very first roller coasters were created in Russia in the 1600s and they were nothing like the typical roller coaster that comes to mind today • People rode down steep ice slides on sleds made of wood or ice and slowed in sand at the end of the ride although accidents were frequent • A French man tried to cash in on the popularity of the coasters and built one in France but the warm climate put an end to that

3. More Roller Coaster History • A waxed wooden slide proved to be much more feasible, along with wooden wheeled sleds. This roller coaster caused less accidents. • In the 1850s people made roller coasters better. • The beginning of American roller coasters began in the 19th century.

4. Physics [how it works] What you may not realize as you’re cruising down the track at 60 miles an hour is that the coaster has no engine. After the top of the first hill it has to complete the ride itself. The conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy is what drives the roller coaster, & all of the kinetic energy you need for the ride is present once the coaster descends the first hill…

5. Eye of the Storm Our roller coaster’s name is Eye of the Storm. It begins by dropping a marble in a paper storm, then it goes down a track then into a big corkscrew. Then the marble falls into a track, takes a wide turn, & goes into a funnel Then drops into a track & takes another wide turn. Once again it goes on 2 tracks & takes a wide turn. Finally it goes on a track, takes a sharp turn, and drops into a funnel.
