2. There are 2 ways to form questions in German… • Either…invert the word order and start with the verb…. (Kennst du Marta?) • Or start with a question word… (Wo wohnt Marta?) We will start with the first one… inverting the word order.

3. Forming a Question without using a Question Word: • When there is no Question word, you MUST use the inverted word order • z.B  • Statement:Du kommstspät -You come late. • Question:Kommstdu spät? -Are you coming late? • Wohnt Herr Riebe in Hamburg? -Does Mr. Riebe live in Hamburg? • Ist Jürgen zu Hause? –Is Jürgen home? • Kennst du Tina? –Do you know Tina?

4. Forming a Question Cont’d… • Formation of questions in German is easier than in English!! • Because English uses a form of the phrase “to do” (Do you learn German?, does he play guitar?, etc.) • German does not—you just skip right to the verb: • Lernst du Deutsch? • Spielst du Gitarre?
