  3. CASE STUDY Acosta/Carpenter Longitudinal Study of Gender Equity in Sport When Title IX was enacted in 1972, over 90% of the head coaches (collegiate) for women’s teams were females. Today, 42.6% of women’s teams are coached by females.

WHY ARE FEMALE COACHES CRITICAL? • Girl participants can see reflection of themselves in leadership • Comfort discussing uncomfortable • Reduce chance of sexual abuse and harassment • Offers economic empowerment: Pathway to employment • Investment in program • Investment in community • In mixed-gender programmes, show boys strong women • Foster support for gender equity • The Girl Effect • Coaches most important factor to impact (GRS)

RECRUITING & DEVELOPING FEMALE COACHES • Advertise • Be willing to travel • Visit venues where the sport is being played • Train girls within the programme • Consider the crossover athlete • Recruit and train caregivers • Contact the national sport governing body/federation • Reconsider sport choice
