FemaleInternal Organs • Uterus (womb) • A hollow, muscular, pear-shaped organ that nourishes and protects a fertilized ovum until birth.
FemaleInternal Organs • Cervix- neck or lower portion of the uterus protrudes into the vagina. It has an opening the size of a pencil point that allows the menstrual flow to pass through. Pap test- sample of cells taken from cervix to look for abnormal cells (Cancer, HPV)
Internal Female Organs • Vagina- Passageway from the uterus to the outside of the body Also called the birth canal Sperm is released here during sexual intercourse Menstrual flow passes through the vagina on its way out of the body
Menstrual Cycle • After puberty the uterus prepares each month for a possible pregnancy. • Approximately every 28 days an egg is released from one of the ovaries. • The release of the mature ova is called OVULATION.
Menstrual Cycle • The ENDOMETRIUM- walls of the uterus fill with blood and become thicker in preparation for a fertilized egg. • If the egg is fertilized it will implant on the uterine wall and a pregnancy begins • If the egg is not fertilized it will break down and leave the body with the used blood and tissue that had collected on the uterine wall

Menstrual Cycle28 Day Cycle • Days 1-8 Menstruation • Days 9-13 Egg matures in one of the ovaries • Day 14- Ovulation-release of mature egg • Days 15-28 Egg travels through fallopian tube to the uterus if it is not fertilized it is shed with the uterine wall • Cycle repeats

Care of Female Reproductive System • Bathe regularly • Have regular medical exams • Pap smears • Mammogram • Report any pain, discharge or other signs of infection • Practice abstinence to avoid STD • Perform regular self-examinations BSE
