  1. Status of W2K at INFN Gian Piero Siroli, Dept. of Physics, Univ. of Bologna and INFN HEPiX-HEPNT 2000, Jefferson Lab.

  2. INFN sites and labs Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  3. Installed Windows systems • From very recent poll results (by R. Gomezel): • Windows 9x: ~31% of total number of installed systems • Windows/NT: ~16% (sum of Windows systems ~47%) • Linux ~18%, MacOS ~17%, Digital/Compaq UNIX ~5%, Sun ~3% • PC is the main hardware platform for desktops Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  4. Windows 2000 systems • W2000 systems (rough estimate): • Currently about 150 installed nodes • Some activity is already starting in a few sites • General trend: • Many sites are starting making experience in W2K management • Some native and W2K-W/NT mixed “domains” • A few services based on W2K already in production (Web server, RAS, Metaframe) • Deployment of a W2K infrastructure and services already foreseen in a few sites in the short/medium term Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  5. Activity on W2000 • Workgroup on W2K created by INFN Computing Committee in late spring to study and propose the architecture best suited to the organization (domain tree or forest, structure of OUs). Final document expected by end of year 2000. • Experience based also on previous NICE infrastructure (single W/NT domain over WAN deployed in 8 sites) • Building w2k test domain over WAN (root domain w2k.infn.it through >2Mb lines); still in initial learning phase Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  6. w2k.infn.it test domain under construction 8Mb 12Mb 6Mb 12Mb 8Mb 2Mb Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  7. W2K test domain • Participating sites (subdomains): CNAF, Lecce, Trieste, Milano, Napoli, Bologna (not all connected yet) • Native mode domain • MS DNS • Some problem in testing Remote Installation Services (RIS) • Terminal Services (over WAN, also for monitoring and/or debugging) • Application Server (published applications, Office installation over WAN through 2Mb link CNAF-Lecce) • Limited tests on domain-wide user groups (to manage inter-site resources) • Good experience with Vmware useful for tests without dedicated hardware; no evidence of problems with Vmware layer Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  8. Planned future activities • Non MS DNS • Security (router ports) • RIPrep (Remote Installation Preparation to clone desktop configurations and applications) • Unix integration (user migration between Win and UNIX) • AFS (Kerberos interoperability) • Samba (UNIX resources served to Win) VS Services for UNIX • DFS • MSI files for non-MS applications • Physics applications!? Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli

  9. Summary • INFN W2K deploying starting slowly (learning and testing) • INFN is evaluating and planning a possible implementation scheme and deployment in the near future • A close collaboration and coordination among W2K HEP sites is considered extremely important in sharing experiences and deal with common problems Enrico M.V.Fasanelli, Gian Piero Siroli
