Background of ASEF • 1996:Inaugural Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit. • 1997:ASEF was established under the framework of ASEM process. • 2004:The partnership grew from 25 to 38 countries, plus the European Commission. • 2007:ASEM welcomed 6 new partners: Bulgaria, Romania, India, Mongolia, Pakistan andASEAN Secretariat (Total: 45 partners) • 2010: During the 8th ASEM Summit (Brussels, Oct 2010), 3 new members joined the ASEM process: Australia, New Zealand and Russia (Total: 48 partners)

  3. ASEF Mission ASEF seeks to promotemutual understanding, deeper engagementand continuing collaborationamong Asia and Europethrough greater intellectual, cultural,and people-to-people exchangesbetween the two regions.

ASEF Provides: • Platform for Asia-Europe dialogues • Permanent networks that reinforce Asia-Europe biregional relations • Civil society outreach of ASEM • Interface between civil societies and governments • Contributions to ASEM • Recommendations for officials’ consideration • Ideas and solutions that would not normallyemerge in purely civil society nor purely inter-governmental processes.

  5. We deliver cross-cultural enrichment to participants from the two regions through conferences, lecture tours, workshops, seminars, and the use of web-based platforms.   9. Asia-Europe Classroom (AEC-NET)‏ Involves teachers, students, and schools Builds a growing network

  10. AEC-NET Conference attended by teachers and educators from ASEM countries. • Various AEC online collaborative learning projects (AEC Projects) involving different groups of students from secondary and high schools of Asia and Europe. Principal activities : Asia-Europe Classroom (AEC-NET)‏

  11. Asia-Europe Classroom (AEC-NET)‏ Aims at creating unique Asia-Europe synergies Combination of virtual space (cyber-classroom) and physical gatherings (face-to-face exchanges, annual conferences)

Award Criteria AEC Projects / AEC Awards AEC Project Groups that have developed the most outstanding online learning platforms / applications at the AEC Conference are granted AEC Awards • Establishing collaborative partnerships • Advancing cultural understanding between Asia and Europe • Outreach to other learners and/or the local community • Effective application of ICT tools • Quality of the presentation of the project (design and structure) • Project implementation

AEC-NET: Going Forward Increase visibility of the AEC-NET in ASEM countries Align the AEC-NET with the new strategy of ASEF Enlarging AEC-NET with the involvement of new individual members, schools, new ASEM countries (Australia, New Zealand and Russia) Furthering the engagement of existing alumni of AEC-NET Introducing new elements to the programme to inject vibes to the programme.
