  1. Aim: Compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Do Now: How do you get your energy? Homework: pg #85 # 1-5 ****EXAM TUESDAY!!!! (Cell transport and cell processes, microscope)*****

  2. Production of ENERGY (ATP) Need nutrients (glucose) to make energy needed perform various activities Respiration

  3. 2 Types of Respiration • Aerobic Respiration • Anaerobic Respiration Where does cellular respiration happen??

  4. Aim: Compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Do Now: Describe the process of aerobic respiration. Where does it occur? Homework: Enjoy your weekend!!!! ****EXAM TUESDAY!!!! (Cell transport and cell processes, microscope)*****

  5. Aerobic Respiration • Oxygen is used to produce ATP • Occurs in mitochondria • C6H12O6 + O2 CO2 + H2O + 36ATP energy

  6. + Glucose Oxygen + + Energy Carbon Dioxide Water

  7. Anaerobic Respiration • Oxygen is NOT used to make energy • Only 2 ATP produced • Fermentation • 2 Types:

  8. 1. Alcohol Fermentation • Occurs in yeast and bacteria • Important to the brewing and baking industries • C6H12O6 ethyl alcohol + CO2 + 2 ATP

  9. 2. Lactic Acid Fermentation • Occurs in animals (muscle cells) • Can lead to muscle fatigue • C6H12O6 lactic acid + 2 ATP

  10. Summary Aerobic Respiration Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide + Water + 36 ATP C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H20 + 36 ATP

  11. Anaerobic Respiration Ethyl Alcohol Fermentation Glucose  Ethyl Alcohol + CO2 + 2 ATP Lactic Acid Fermentation Glucose  Lactic Acid + 2 ATP

  12. What is photosynthesis? • Process in which plants use sunlight (energy) to produce glucose (food) • Form of autotrophic nutrition – the ability to make food • Occurs in chloroplasts

  13. What is the equation for photosynthesis? 6 CO2 + 6 H2O → C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Raw materials Products sunlight chlorophyll Waste – Into air GLUCOSE

  14. Review!!
