Hunters and Gatherers • Hunters and Gatherers had to work together to survive • The women usually gathered food and the men usually hunted • Using their resources, they made a lot of tools • Most united in bands which usually had about 30 people in them
Farmers and Herders • Neolithic Period (New Stone Age) people learned to raise crops and no longer depended on hunting and gathering • Farming led to permanent homes gathered together in villages • Some of the earliest crops were wheat and barley • People domesticated animals for human use (sheep, goats, and pigs)
Jericho, CatalHuyuk, and Ur • Jericho was built in an oasis and had a good supply of water for herders and nomads • CatalHuyuk exported obsidian and their houses were built of mud and you entered them through the roof • Ur had a ziggurat which was used to store goods and had a temple on top to worship their gods • These 3 early cities had a civilization which was a complex society that has religion, a government, and schools
Summary of chapter • I learned that in the Paleolithic period they depended on one another for survival. They used resources around them to make life easier • In the Neolithic Period, the people started to farm and domesticate animals. • Then there were the early cities ( Jericho, Ur, and CatalHuyuk) and they started forming civilizations and had unique features of each city.
