The Application Process Chris Inabnit
Steps Take classes covered on the MCAT • Take the MCAT • Are you realistically competitive? • Finish medical school pre-reqs (if you haven’t already) • Submit AMCAS Primary • Submit Secondaries • Interview • Get accepted
Competitiveness • Use these to see where you do and don’t have a shot: MDApps Competitiveness Calculator Competitiveness Spreadsheet
MDApps • Gives you an idea what people with your stats are doing • A person with 34 MCAT and 3.72 GPA (great stats): -Applied to over 30 schools -Rejected by 21 -Accepted by only 4 • This is why you apply broadly!
Have a Question? • Student Doctor Network (SDN)!!! • Anything you could possibly want to know is here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net
SDN • MCAT Threads • Pre-Osteo Threads • Pre-Allo Threads • Interview Threads
The AMCAS Primary • Takes a LONG time • Start AS SOON AS IT IS RELEASED (~May 1st) Submission: May – mid July: early (Great) mid July – mid August: normal (Peak time for submissions, verification takes 6 weeks. OK, but not great) mid August – deadline: LATE (Unless you are a stellar applicant and submit your secondaries the day you receive them, you might be applying for waitlist spots) Don’t forget it how long it takes to verify!!!
The AMCAS Primary • It is exepensive! • $160 base rate • $31 for each additional school
The AMCAS Primary • Two very important sections: -Work/Activities -Personal Statement • SDN to the rescue! Work/Activities Tips Personal Statement Suggestions and Reader Lists
The AMCAS Primary • Things you can do before and after submitting your AMCAS: -Add a letter of recommendation -Assign letters to schools -Add school to apply to
Secondaries • Some come as soon as your AMCAS is verified • Some come over a month later • Some schools screen with MCAT and GPA, some don’t • Some are TIME SENSITIVE: for example, you have two weeks from the day they email you the secondary to complete it • Finish these QUICKLY • $50 - $150 per school
Cost estimate • MCAT plus practice tests from AAMC website: ~$500 • Applying to 20 schools: $780 • Secondaries for half of them: ~$900 • Travelling to interview: ??? $100, $1000, $2000, it depends how many places you go • TOTAL (very rough estimate): $2000 - $4000
Final Thought Time is of the essence, so it is crucial to submit your AMCAS and secondary applications as quickly as possible. However, be sure to thoroughly review, revise, and rethink EVERYTHING you write. It would be a shame to have your application thrown away because of a typo (this happens, according to admission committee faculty members)
