  2. When it was written… • Written in 1599 • Shakespeare already famous • Queen Elizabeth 66 years old and 40 years on the throne – more importantly, no heir • Controversial wars in Ireland • Last of a series of four plays after Richard II, Henry IV parts 1 and 2.

  3. Richard II • Richard II was a weak and unpopular King (ruled 1377–1399) • Lead unpopular wars in Ireland • Deposed by cousin, Henry Bollingbroke, who becomes Henry IV • Executed after Henry’s accession

  4. Henry IV, Part 1 • Faced many rebellions – his accession left in question the divine right of kings • Henry’s son, Hal, forsakes his royal duties and spends time with drunks and lowlifes • Hal’s best friend is Falstaff, an old lout with great charisma and wit • Falstaff makes fools of many, including the English Army, in pursuit of pleasure and money – but always with charm.

Henry IV, Part 2 • Henry IV quashes another rebellion • Falstaff continues to make trouble with his band including Doll Tearsheet, a prostitute, and other hangers-on that appear in Henry V • Henry IV, dying, is greatly concerned that Hal is concerned with selfish desires – Hal assures him that he is ready to be King. • After Henry IV dies and Hal is crowned as Henry V, Henry V now rejects Falstaff publicly and imprisons them

  6. a moment for Falstaff… • Very popular and unique character • Ironically, Queen Elizabeth commissions a play about Falstaff falling in love – Merry Wives of Windsor • Famous opera about him as well

Henry V • Takes place in the second year of his reign where people still doubted his leadership • By the second scene, Henry V decides to invade and conquer France • The audience hears of Falstaff’s illness and death early in the play • Pistol, Nym, and Bardolph(old drinking buddies with Falstaff and Hal) enlist in the English Army

  8. Hundred Years War • Series of separate wars in France lasting from 1337 to 1453 • Wars between competing houses within France for the crown as well as with England • England controlled much of the Northwest of France for many years • Focuses on two major battles in 1415 • Siege of Harfluer • Battle of Agincourt
