1. Cyber Crime Awareness Week Intended to inform ELFY employees about Cyber Crime and how we can prevent it.

2. Why Should We Care About Cyber Crime? • It costs businesses $1 trillion per year globally. • It is number 3 on the FBI’s list of top priorities. • We are held responsible for customer information. • Legal repercussions are just as likely as monetary losses.

3. Example of Cyber Crime PayPal • Victim of a “denial of service” attack in 2010. • The attack was a “protest” on PayPal’s decision to stop processing donations to WikiLeaks. • Attack lead to £3.5 million ($ 5.6 million) in losses.

4. Example of Cyber Crime Google • Victim of cyber espionage in 2009 by the Chinese in Operation Aurora. • The attack targeted intellectual property and several Gmail accounts. • Google reacted by accessing computers in Taiwan to discover that 30 other companies were also vicimized.

5. Different Kinds of Attacks Phishing - Technique to gain personal information for the purpose of identity theft What they are after: • Name and username. • Address and phone number. • Password or PIN. • Bank account number. • ATM/debit or credit card number. • Credit card validation code (CVC)  • Social security number (SSN).

6. Different Kinds of Attacks Spear Phishing – More sophisticated version of phishing, which targets individuals with information already collected about them. • Usually comes in the form of an email that appears to be legitimate. • The attackers may use malware or a fake website to steal the victims information. • Their success relies on convincing the victim that they are trustworthy.

Different Kinds of Attacks Whaling - Spear phishing technique directed to senior business executives and government leaders. • Usually initiated to gather sensitive information about the company. • Often take the form of subpoenas and other urgent legal actions. • A whaling email includes a call to action to open a file, download an attachment, or click on a link

8. Different Kinds of Attacks Pharming - Rerouting your request for a legitimate Web site for the purpose of collecting personal information. • Comes in the form of links embedded in emails. • Or by links that have been embedded into legitimate website’s by hackers. • Usually look and feel like a trusted website and can easily go unnoticed.

Facts About Cyber Crime • Cyber Crimes cost individual companies an average of $3.5 million. • The cost to prevent Cyber attacks is about 1/3 of that price. • Most companies attacked have the attitude that cyber attacks won’t likely happen to them. • Malicious insider attacks can take up to 42 days or more to resolve. • Social Media also acts as a gateway for these attacks.

Facts About Cyber Crime • The most costly cyber crimes are those caused by web attacks and malicious insiders • Information theft accounts for 42 percent of total external costs. • Costs associated with disruption to business or lost productivity accounts for 22 percent of external costs. • Reputation damage, negative press, and loss of shareholder confidence also represents a large fraction of expenses.

11. How We Can Prevent Cyber Crime Prevention will always be the best line of defense against cyber criminals. Leaving ourselves vulnerable increases our chances to be targeted. • Make sure software is always up to date. • Make sure all workstations and servers have the latest in business class anti-virus installed. • Back up critical data on a regular basis.

How We Can Prevent Cyber Crime Informing employees of the types of cyber attacks and how to avoid them can drastically reduce the chances of attack. • Don’t click on links in suspicious emails. • Understand that your smartphone is also vulnerable. • Keep all personal information to yourself. • Do not connect to Wi-Fi from external parties. • Credit cards offer better protection than debit cards

13. How We Can Prevent Cyber Crime • Always make sure nobody is watching you enter private information. • Do not log into online bank accounts on public computers. • Never conduct online transactions over a wireless network. • Always turn of Bluetooth devices when not in use. Let’s make our community a safer place. Inform other co-workers, family, and friends of these issues and how to prevent them
