  1. Photosynthesis 12/03/12

  2. ActivitySection A worksheets • A tree can be very heavy. Wood is tough and strong. What do you think the wood that makes up a tree is made of? Where does the “stuff” making the wood come from?

  3. Photosynthesis • The way in which green plants make their food Chemical energy Light energy Photosynthesis Carbon Dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen Sunlight Chlorophyll

  4. Factors needed for photosynthesis • Carbon dioxide • Plants get CO2 from the air • CO2 passes into the leaves through openings called the stomata • Water • Plants get water from the soil • Water passes into the roots up the xylem and is distributed to the leaves of the plant • Light • Plants get light from the sun • The light is absorbed by the leaves • Chlorophyll • Plants make chlorophyll • Its is a green dye and allows plants to absorb light

  5. Products of photosynthesis • Glucose • The food made by the plant is called glucose • It can be used to provide energy for respiration • It can be used to form starch in the plant • It can be used to form cellulose for ne cell walls • Oxygen • The gas resulting from photosynthesis is oxygen • It can be used for respiration to provide energy for the leaf • Or it can be released from the leaf out into the air

  6. Photosynthesis rap • An interesting rap explaining photosynthesis

  7. Tropism • Tropism is the change in growth of a plant in response to an outside stimulus • Phototropism • is the way that a plant changes its growth in response to light • Geotropism • is the way that a plant changes its growth in response to gravity

  8. Homework • Complete the remainder of the worksheet for homework
