  1. Year 9 Revision Graphs Reactions Reproduction Nutrition Rocks Elements, compounds and mixtures Sound Balanced Forces Mass & Weight

  2. Graphs Y - axis Distance (seconds) Time (seconds) X - axis • What you control always goes on the x – axis • In this graph, when the results were taken, time was controlled – in seconds • What you measure goes on the Y- axis • In this graph, the distance the car travelled was measured – Distance in metres • Always label the axis with the variables and their units!!

  3. Reactions of Metals 1 Metal + Water  Metal hydroxide + hydrogen

  4. Reactions of Metals 2 • Metal + hydrochloric acid  Metal chloride + hydrogen • Metal + sulphuric acid  Metal sulphate + hydrogen • Metal + Nitric acid  Metal nitrate + hydrogen

  5. Reproduction Oviduct • Fertilisation happens if a sperm meets an egg in the • The is where the mother’s blood comes close to the babies blood so that the baby receives food and oxygen. The mother’s blood takes away the waste products made by the baby. Oviduct Placenta Placenta

  6. Reproduction • An egg cell orovum is made in theOvary • Sperm cells are made in the testes

  7. Nutrition • Protein – for growth and repair found in meat, beans and dairy • Carbohydrate - for energy, found in pasta, rice, bread and fruit • Fats and oil – forinsulation found in meat, dairy and nuts • Fibre - to prevent constipation, keeps food moving, found in fruit and vegetables

  8. Rock Cycle Igneous rocks • Igneous rocks are called fire rocks. Underground, molten rock called magma, deep within the earth becomes trapped in small pockets. As these pockets of magma cool slowly underground, the magma becomes igneous rocks. • Igneous rocks are also formed when volcanoes erupt, causing the magma to rise above the earth's surface. When magma appears above the earth, it is called lava. Igneous rocks are formed as the lava cools above ground.

  9. Sedimentary rocks • For thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of our earth have been eroded--broken down and worn awayby wind and water. • These little bits of our earth are washed downstream – transported, where they settle to the bottom of the rivers, lakes, and oceans. • Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each. • These layers are pressed down more and more through time - compacted, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.

  10. Metamorphic rocks • Metamorphic rocks are rocks that • have "morphed" into another kind of • rock. • These rocks were once • igneous or sedimentary rocks.  How do sedimentary and igneous rocks change? The rocks are under tons and tons of pressure, which fosters heat build up, and this causes them to change.

  11. Elements are materials made up of one type of atom only. It follows that compounds contain two or more types of atom. Na Cl Elements, Compounds and Mixture • Elements are made of only one substance • Compounds are two or more substances chemically joined together

  12. H sea water: a mixture of salt and water (two compounds) Na Cl O H • Mixtures are two or more substances which are NOT joined together Salt Water • They are mixed, not bonded, and so are usually not too hard to separate back into their ingredients. (For example, it is easy to get salt from sea water.)

  13. Sound 1 - Frequency & Pitch Increasing the frequency of a sound wave increases the pitch and we hear a HIGHER note LOW PITCH! HIGH PITCH!

  14. Sound 2 - Amplitude & Volume Increasing the amplitude of a sound wave increases the volume and we hear a LOUDER note LOW AMPLITUDE QUIET! BIG AMPLITUDE LOUD!

  15. Balanced Forces 1 If the forces on an object are balanced, It stays still OR moves with steady speed

  16. Unbalanced Forces An unbalanced force will cause an object to ACCELERATE BALANCED FORCES AT REST OR STEADY SPEED UNBALANCED FORCES CAUSE MOVEMENT (ACCELERATION is a BETTER answer)

  17. Mass in KILOGRAMMES!!!Weight in NEWTONS!!! The mass of an object is the amount of substance measured in kilograms (kg) It does NOT depend on gravity! Mass 0.1kg The weight of an object is a force caused by gravity. It is measured in newtons (N) On a different planet you would have a different weight depending on the planet’s gravity field. Weight 1N (on Earth)

  18. Remember! • A mark a minute!! • Listen out for time checks! • Keep an eye on the clock • If you are short of time, do the first parts of the remaining questions • Answer the question! • GOOD LUCK!
