CAREER • “A profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling.” • Merriam-Webster • “The sequence and variety of occupations (paid and unpaid) which one undertakes throughout a lifetime. More broadly, 'career ' includes life roles, leisure activities, learning and work.” • Queensland Department of Education and Training

  5. Job Trends • Career opportunities tend to change over time • Trends are like waves on the ocean. Some are very big, some are very small. • Some may last only a few years, while others seem to last forever • Trends move and change everything they come in contact with. (Robinson, n.d.)

Options for individual exploration • 1) CAREER • “Work” tab  Compare Careers • Enter keywords to find careers you are interested in then compare them to each other • Review all 6 categories in the column on the left • 2) COLLEGE • “Learn” tab  School Finder • Complete all 7 categories in the column on the left • 3) MILITARY • Enter “military” in the search box in the top right corner • Review the results and compare two that you are interested in

  14. Reflection task • CAREER • Discuss at least two different careers that you compared. Talk about the similarities and differences and why you chose them. Were they in the results lists of your assessments? • COLLEGE • Talk about what is important to you when looking for a college. What colleges matched the criteria you completed? What do you like about these colleges? What don’t you like? • MILITARY • What jobs/military colleges did you compare? Talk about the similarities and differences and why you would like to join the military

  15. completing an application • Applications vary greatly • Things to keep in mind: • Read and follow instructions carefully. • Complete the application as neatly as possible. • Tailor your answers to the job you are seeking. • Don't leave any blanks. • Always answer questions truthfully. • Provide references. • Proofread your application before submitting it. Helpful Hints • Before writing anything, read the ENTIRE application • When listing previous work experience or activities always list them in reverse chronological order (most recent first) • Use skill-based action words • Achieved, coordinated, participated, developed • Identify the top 5-10 skills required for the job/college you are applying for • throughout your application make sure that the descriptions you give of each job you’ve held highlight skills and experience that match the job/college you want.
