Extended Services Evesham Planning Day 27 November 2007David Onions
Introduction • Research & Intelligence Unit • Needs Analysis • Cluster Profiles • InstantAtlas • What the data shows
Research & Intelligence Unit • Planning, Economy and Performance (PEP) Directorate • Areas of work, include: • Market Research e.g. Citizen’s Panel, BIG Questionnaire • Population forecasting • Needs Analysis e.g. Children, Health, Crime • Evaluation e.g. Children’s Fund, Youth Inclusion and Support Programme • Performance Management
Needs Analysis • For Children and Young People’s Plan and Joint Area Review • Data analysis in three phases until February 2008 • Data analysis focussed around the outcomes of the Children’s Act • Phase One to inform Extended Services planning • www.worcestershire.gov.uk/chsneeds
InstantAtlas Why have we built it? To share data that can be used to: • identify specific issues affecting particular local areas • assist in the planning of services for children and young people Where can you find it? www.worcestershire.gov.uk/chsneeds
Super Output Areas What are Lower Layer Super Output Areas? Small geographical units which contain a number of postcodes Average size = 1,500 residents Number in England = 32,482 Number in Worcestershire = 361 Why have you used LSOAs? It is the smallest scale available for many datasets To avoid being able to identify individuals
InstantAtlas What is it? • A simple and accessible web-based mapping tool What does it do? • Makes data easy to use • Visually presents around 150 datasets via maps, tables and bar-charts • Aggregates detailed (postcode) data to small geographical units – Lower Layer Super Output Areas (c. 1,500 residents in each, 361 in Worcestershire) • Displays data according to where people live (residence based)
Potential Issues What does the data show? • The percentage achieving Level 4 at Key Stage 2 is below the county average
Potential Issues What does the data show? • A lower proportion of the working age population have a Level 4 (first degree or equivalent) qualification
Potential Issues What does the data show? • Average household income across the cluster is slightly lower than the total for the county. Just over 10% of children live in poverty using the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2004.
Potential Issues What does the data show? • A similar percentage of total known offenders over the last 12 months in the cluster were under 18 as with Worcestershire as a whole.
Potential Issues What does the data show? • The rate of car ownership in the cluster is a significantly higher than for Worcestershire as a whole. • The proportion of the population claiming “main” benefits is lower than the county average. • In general, educational attainment of children in this cluster is better than for the whole of Worcestershire. • School attendance of pupils living in the cluster is much higher than the Worcestershire total.
Future Developments Where will we be taking this? Two more phases: • more datasets added to InstantAtlas • working with schools • further development of profiles • addition of a User Guide Ongoing to February 2008. What do you want/need? Please tell us.
