  2. Hadith • ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, reported: When Allah’s Messenger [SAWS] occupied himself in the prayer at night, he observed it with such a extended qiyam (posture of standing) until his feet were swollen. • ‘A’ishah said: “Allah’s Messenger, you do this in spite of the fact that your earlier and latter sins have been forgiven for you?” He [SAWS] replied: “‘A’ishah, should I not prove myself to be a thankful servant of Allah?”

  3. Shukr • Despite knowing that all of His sins would be forgiven and He would be entered into Paradise, the Prophet (SAW) still stood up in prayer all night. • Why? To be thankful (Shukr) to Allah (SWT) • We too must be thankful to Allah (SWT)

  4. Shukr • Definition of thankfulness? • The state of being aware and appreciative of a benefit • An attitude of heart from which you are aware of your blessings • What should we be thankful for? • Create a list

  6. Shukr • Our parents • Our families • Our intelligence/abilities • Our jobs/work • Our school • Our respect in the community

  7. Shukr • Shouldn’t we be standing up at night thanking Allah (SWT) until our feet swell up?

  8. Shukr • How do you show thankfulness for something or to someone? • 3 stages of Shukr • ShukrbilQulab (ﺏﻠﻗﻠﺑﺭﮑﺸ): Heart • Feel gratitude in your heart • ShukrbilLisaan (ﻥﺎﺴﻠﺑﺭﮑﺸ): Tongue • Say Thank You with your tongue • ShukrbilJavareh (ﺡﺮﺍﻮﺟﻠﺑﺭﮑﺸ): Action • Use item appropriately • Try to reciprocate the favor

  10. Hadith • “He who is not grateful to people is not grateful to Allah (SWT).” • Who are the people we should be grateful towards?

  11. Shukr • Who are the people we should be grateful towards? • Prophet Muhammad (SAW) • Our Parents • Our Family Members • Our Teachers • Our Imams/Scholars • Our Neighbors • Our Community Members • Our Classmates/Our Friends

  12. Shukr • How do we show gratefulness to these people? (List that we made) • With our heart • With our tongue • With our action

  13. Surah Al-A’raf (7), Ayat 16-17 • Shaitan declared: "Since You let me deviate, now I will lie in ambush for mankind on Your Right Way. • I will come upon them from the front, from the rear, from the right, and from the left, and You will find most of them to be ungrateful."

  14. Surah Luqman (31), Ayat 12 • Allah (SWT) said, “And whoever gives his thanks, he does so for the benefit of his own-self. And who so ever conceals his thanks, then he ought to know that Allah is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise.”

  15. Hadith • “Wondrous is the affair of the believer for there is good in every matter of his; for if is he is happy, he thanks Allah (SWT), thus there is good for him. And if he is harmed, he shows patience, thus there is good for him.”

  16. Shukr • A Muslim should always be in a state of gratefulness • We thank Allah when something good happens • We are patient when something “bad” happens • We should never be complaining about anything
