Making the most of your Multimedia Suite Wendy Adeniji Language World 2007
What is a multimedia suite? It is a network of computers, with appropriate software, which provide functions for listening activities, video, word-processing and other computer applications. Even if you do not have a dedicated ICT suite for languages, if you have a set of headsets (see www.cpc.co.uk) , the appropriate software and a reasonably fast network and Internet connection, you have a multimedia suite!
Today we will look at how to exploit the multimedia suite using: Listening activities Video Word Purchased software The best websites
Listening Activities Creating and editing audio recordings Free: Sound recorder in Windows Free: Audacity: freeware available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) Adobe Audition – many schools have this Sanako – can be purchased for MFL
Listening Activities You or your pupils can create and edit your own sound files, either .wav or .mp3 These could be stand alone sound files, which can be emailed to the teacher, or saved by pupils onto memory sticks or mp3 players. They can also be integrated into a Powerpoint presentation to widen the range of skills used by pupils to include listening and speaking skills.
Listening Activities Example: preparation for GCSE speaking test. Teacher prerecords questions as an audacity file (but not exported as a .wav file). Pupils open project and record their answers. They can rerecord over them until they are happy with the result. Pupils then export as a .wav file which they can email home/ save onto a memory stick or mp3 player.
Video You or your pupils can create and edit your own video files using a digital camcorder Video recordings often need editing. Windows XP or later comes with Moviemaker In order to digitise existing resources efficiently, a video capture card is useful (some PCs and laptops have these already) Go to google videos to download video exerts in the foreign language
Video Moving image material can also be found on the Internet in sharing websites such as Youtube and Google videos Trailers in the foreign language are particularly useful, and can be found in a number of websites e.g. www.commeaucinema.com It can be time-consuming to create activities to go with these resources: see the Teacher Resource Exchange for ideas e.g. le Tabac with a worksheet
Word A simple Word document can be created, either with some text and multiple choice questions, or with a sound file inserted and multiple choice questions.
Purchased Software Software can be purchased and networked for use with a multimedia suite Rosetta Stone Taskmagic Essentials Kartouche French and Spanish storyboards
