  3. Current Statistics • Each Week the following deaths occur as a result of past asbestos exposure: • 3 Plumbers • 20 Tradesmen • 6 Electricians • 6 Joiners

  4. Current Statistics • Recorded deaths 2006 • 2056 Mesothelioma Deaths • 2056 Lung Cancers Deaths • 111 Asbestosis Deaths

  5. Current Statistics • Estimated trades account for 3000 deaths per annum. • Where do the other 1000 plus cases come from?

  6. Asbestos Risk • Those contracting asbestos ailments can be split into 2 groups • Occupationally Exposed • Developing Asbestosis, Lung Cancers & Mesothelioma • The Non-Occupationally Exposed. • Developing Mesothelioma

  7. Mesothelioma • Exposure to lower levels of asbestos can potentially cause Mesothelioma • These deaths have generally occurred as a result of both occupational exposure and non- occupational exposure

  9. Non-Occupational Mesothelioma • Increase in teacher Mesothelioma • Greater Media coverage of schools issues • Increase Union concern about risks • Concerns about long terms low level exposure

  10. Non-Occupational Mesothelioma • Historically accepted that high level exposure resulted in asbestos illnesses. • Now concern growing concerning low level exposure especially amongst youngsters. • Dr Robin Howie and others currently considering these risks.

  15. Regulation 4 • Requires an assessment be undertaken of all non-domestic premises to ensure the risks of asbestos are controlled. • This assessment is the responsibility of the ‘Duty Holder’.

  16. Regulation 5 • “An employer shall not undertake work in demolition, maintenance, or any other work which exposes or is liable to expose his employees to asbestos……”

  17. Regulation 7 • “An employer shall not undertake any work with asbestos unless he has prepared a suitable written plan of work detailing how the work is to be carried out..”

  18. Regulation 10 • “Every employer shall ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to those of his employees- • (a) who are or who are liable to be exposed to asbestos, or who supervise such employees….”
