Essential Fats for Brain Health

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL FATS FOR BRAIN HEALTH? Did you know that fat is made up of building blocks called fatty acids which play a role in just about every aspect of health? There are two distinct types of fatty acids essential and non-essential. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are critical to health and wellness and humans and other animals cannot synthesize them, so they must come from the diet.

  1. Essential Fats for Brain Health WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL FATS FOR BRAIN HEALTH? Did you know that fat is made up of building blocks called fatty acids which play a role in just about every aspect of health? There are two distinct types of fatty acids essential and non-essential. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are critical to health and wellness and humans and other animals cannot synthesize them, so they must come from the diet. Essential Fats for Brain Health Did you know that fat is made up of building blocks called fatty acids which play a role in just about every aspect of health? There are two distinct types of fatty acids essential and non- essential. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are critical to health and wellness and humans and other animals cannot synthesize them, so they must come from the diet. EFAs are found in foods such as fish and other seafood (especially cold-water fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines), nuts and seeds (such as flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts), and plant oils (such as flaxseed oil, soybean oil, and canola oil). They can also be supplied via essential fats supplements (primarily fish oil supplements) and have a positive effect on brain health. While EFAs are critical to the heart, lungs, blood vessels and immune system, EFAs are especially essential to the optimal development, function, and maintenance of the brain. This isn’t surprising when you consider that the brain is made up of 60% fat, which ensures the brain’s integrity and ability to perform throughout life. Benefits for the Brain Aids in the Growth of Brain Tissue Boosts Synthesis & Function of Neurotransmitters Facilitates Communication Between Neurons Preserves the Integrity of Cell Membranes Supports Brain Blood Flow Promotes Cognition, Including Memory May Prevent Neurodegenerative Disorders Including Low Mood & Anxiety        Who Needs Essential Fats for Brain Health? EFAs, most notably omega-3s, are one of the four most common nutrient deficiencies across North America, predisposing us to a range of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis, ADD/ADHD, as well as all sorts of hair, skin, and nail problems. Those deficient in EFAs can also have trouble conceiving and display slow wound healing. As a general rule, given the lack of nutrients found in the modern North American diet, most adults and children could benefit from a daily Omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Essential Fats in Supplement Form – Potency, Forms, and Formats Essential fatty acids come in capsules, softgels, chewables, gummies, as well as myriad liquid flavours, in a range of potencies. They also come in different ratios, according to health needs.

  2. Final Thoughts on Essential Fats and the Brain EFAs come as omega-3s, 6s, and/or 9s, all three of which play a role in maintaining balance. However, it’s important to note that the ratio that these are supplied in is really what’s key. The typical Western diet is loaded with omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are precursors to several pro-inflammatory mediators. This, obviously, predisposes us to inflammatory conditions. Omega-3s, on the other hand, are anti-inflammatory, so help tame the inflammatory response in the body. Since our modern diets tend to feature a 20:1 ratio of pro- inflammatory omega-6s to anti-inflammatory omega-3s, it's crucial to supplement with an omega-3 formula daily to offset any potential systemic inflammation in the body. Omega-9s, unlike 3s and 6s, are considered “nonessential fatty acids” because the body can make some on its own, as needed.
