  2. Oil Painting Mediums alter the working properties of paint. Although called “mediums,” mediums typically are composed of a binder and sometimes a solvent. Additives, on the other hand, consist of solvents, oils, waxes, resins, extender pigments and other substances that are used to change the consistency of paint. Here you will find oil painting additives (or as we prefer to call them “amendments”) made by Natural Pigments. These amendments are designed to alter the consistency of oil paint in novel ways, different from the varnishes that were introduced into common use during the 19th century. Painting amendments change the handling properties of paint, such as flow out and leveling; increase or decrease tackiness and drag; hasten or retard drying time, increase or decrease gloss, increase transparency, or other characteristics.

  3. Oleogel Oleogel is a thixotropic painting medium made with linseed oil and pyrogenic silica that adds transparency and thixotropic body to oil, resin-oil or alkyd paint.

  4. Oleoresgel Oleoresgel is a firm thixotropic gel made with bodied linseed oil, alkyd resin and fumed silica. Add to thicken colors for creating impasto effects that do not sink. Contains no driers, so it is safe to use in oil painting without worry of cracking.

  5. Linseed Oil Sampler RublevColours offers alternatives to oleoresinous mediums for painting by offering a sampler of four linseed oil products (2 fluid ounces each) to amend oil colors and to prepare in emulsions with tempera.

  6. Gum Turpentine Gum Turpentine is obtained by the distillation of sap tapped from living pine trees. Turpentine has more solvency than mineral spirits or odorless mineral spirits. Its high solvent strength makes it the best choice for thinning oils and natural resins.

  7. Canada Balsam Canada Balsam is the pale yellow oleoresin with a faint greenish cast of the balsam fir tree. It is dries to a clear transparent film. It is used as a plasticizing resin for varnishes and paints. Canada balsam is amorphous when dried. Since it does not crystallize with age, its optical properties do not deteriorate.
