What is a Documentary? • What is the purpose? • Where does the information come from? • How is the message conveyed? • The creative interpretation of reality • The gray area between art and journalism • The presentation of socially useful information to the public • To inform or educate • First hand accounts, historical and primary documents, film and photographs from the time period • Usually conveyed through video and interviews
Film or Movie • What is the purpose? • Where does the information come from? • How is the message conveyed? • Usually to entertain • A film is a story brought to life through moving images and sound. • Could be based on something that happened, or entirely made up by the film maker/director/writer
What is a memoir? • What is the purpose? • Where does the information come from? • How is the message conveyed? • To entertain, inform or convey a message • Non-fiction – based on a portion of a person’s life • Through events, details and descriptions
Compare and contrast • Create a venn diagram with a partner that demonstrates the similarities and differences between: • A documentary • A film/movie • A memoir

Memoir - Night • Read pp. 107-109 • Identify how the the liberation is portrayed: • What key words does the author use? • What images does the author create? • What is the mood (how it makes you feel as a result of the events and images the author creates? What evidence do you have? • What is the author’s tone (attitude towards the topic – Liberation)? What evidence do you have?
Documentary – “The War” • Identify how the the liberation is portrayed: • What images do you see? • What is said? • How is music/sound used? • What is the mood? Think about your reaction to the images. • What is the film maker’s attitude toward the topic? • How effective is the film maker?
Film – “Life is Beautiful” • Introduction • Part 1, Part 2 • Identify how the the liberation is portrayed: • What images do you see? • What is said? • What is your reaction to the images? • What do you think the film maker wants you to understand/feel? • How effective is the film maker?
Timed-Write Response • Compare and contrast how the liberation of the concentration camps is portrayed in at least two different mediums (documentary, fiction, and film). • What text structure should you use? Questions to consider: • How was the liberation portrayed? • What was the impact on the audience? • What was the purpose of the author? Was that purpose achieved? Was it effective? • What is the impact of the different treatment of the liberation?
