1. A matted layer of roots, stems, runners, blades,and clippings is called thatch. This vegetative barrier can be ½ inch thick or more depending on the soil condition. A thick thatch layer is impossible to remove with a dethatching machine, because such machines can barely penetrate the thatch layer and may result in tearing the grass right out of the soil.
