  2. The International System of Units (AKA the Metric System) • The International System is called the SI, using the first two initials of its French name Système Internationald'Unités. • It is a measurement system based on units of ten.

  3. In all there are seven SI base units: • the meter (m) for distance, • the kilogram (kg) for mass, • the second (s) for time, • the ampere (A) for electric current, • the Kelvin (K) for temperature, • the mole (mol) for amount of substance, and • the candela (cd) for intensity of light.

  4. There are several dozen prefixes used but the ones listed below are most commonly used in scientific measurements.
