  2. SECN Background • SECN staff located in multiple offices • No overlap between DM Staff and ‘ologists’ within network offices • In early stages of protocol implementation • Relatively large network staff • DB design began in MS Access and has moved to SQL Server

  3. Example Implementations • Water Quality Protocol was first, followed by Shorebird Monitoring • For both, data collection evolved over the first couple of years • Reporting requirements are constantly growing – depending on the audience

  7. Lessons Learned • Balance the need for DB development with the stability of the protocol • Include the DM in conversations related to protocol changes that affect the database • Partnerships are great but can really make the data collection efforts vary and the DB development more challenging

  8. Lessons Learned 2 • Detailed annual work plans are key to making sure expectations are realistic • Foster good relationships with IT staff • Engage park staff, particularly on reporting needs – this will likely be different from what network ecologists want/need
