Sakaibrary Project Overview • Partnership of Indiana University (IU) and University of Michigan (UM) Libraries • Supported by Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and IU/UM • January 1, 2006 - June 30, 2007
Additional Sakaibrary Project Partners • Libraries at: • Johns Hopkins University • Northwestern University • Stanford University • Yale University • University of California Berkeley
Sakaibrary Project Goals • Build tools to provide seamless integration of content from licensed library databases within Sakai for instructors • Leverage existing library technology infrastructure and work in Sakai (Twin Peaks) • Prototype functionality for librarians to present content in Sakai and students to discover licensed content within Sakai. • Engage librarians, students, and faculty in the design and testing
Milestones So Far • Usage scenarios – March 2006 • Requirements – May 2006 • First phase implementation – October 2006 • Citation list as Sakai resource • Searching library resources through Repository OSID connector to metasearch tools • OpenURL linking • Usability testing – November 2006 • Planning for pilot testing and second phase development - Now
Citation Lists • New capability in Sakai • Create references from library search, import, or direct entry • Generate persistent links using OpenURL • Support import/export of citations in various common formats
Library Search • Searching of licensed library databases and open content • Adding results to citation list • Based on existing work: • Twin Peaks Navigator • OKI (Open Knowledge Initiative) Repository OSID
Library Search • Challenges • Thousands of resources to connect to • License agreements often prevent copying articles • Need to create persistent links to articles • Libraries constantly changing subscription vendors • Solution? • Leverage existing metasearch and link resolver technologies to connect to search sources
Library Metasearch Tools • Support federated (broadcast) search of multiple resources • Provide standard interface for searching hundreds of different commercial and open databases • Variety of products • IU: SirsiDynix SingleSearch • UM: ExLibris MetaLib
Link Resolvers • Originally to support linking from a reference in one database to full text in another • Based on OpenURL standard • Citation encoded in URL • Local institutional link resolver • ExLibris SFX most common
