  3. Why Cedar Falls, Iowa? • Town founded in 1845 • Soldiers’ Orphans’ homebuilt in 1866 • Larger facility built in 1869 ORPHANS

  4. Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home • 1876 - Vacant building voted by legislate to become Iowa’s dedicated “Normal School” • Would train teachers for public school service ORPHANS

  5. J.C. Gilchrist • First administrator of the Iowa Normal School, 1876-1886 • Well-respected as a strong and visionary leader • Lost position to Homer Seerley amidst great controversy GILCHRIST

  6. Gilchrist Era Notables • First day of classes: September 6, 1876 • 88 students • 4 faculty (Gilchrist, Burnham, Webster, Wright) • David Sands Wright – Taught on campus for 50 years GILCHRIST

  7. Homer Seerley • Second Administrator of the Iowa Normal School, 1886-1928 • 40 years as President left an indelible impact on the campus SEERLEY

  8. Seerley Era Notables • Many, many building & facility projects • Renamed Iowa State Teachers College (1909) • World War I and Spanish Flu outbreak (1917-1918) • The Campanile built (1926) • Victory over ISU football team! (1898)

  9. Orval Latham • Third President, 1928-1940 • Led the campus through the Great Depression • Special interest in campus beautification • Died in office due to complications from surgery LATHAM

  10. Latham Era Notables • The Commons (1932) • Prexy’s Pond (1933) • Mascot adopted – the “Purple Panthers” (1933) LATHAM

  11. Malcolm Price • Fourth President, 1940-1950 • Led the campus through World War II and postwar boom • Resigned presidency, remained Professor until retiring in 1963 PRICE

  12. Price Era Notables • 12K WAVES, 10K Yeoman, 2K Army Air Force members trained (1942) • GI Bill causes postwar boom (1946)

  13. James William Maucker • Fifth President, 1950-1970 • From 2700 to 9000 Students • Led institution through 1960’s MAUCKER

  14. Maucker Era Notables • First Grad Program Offered – M.A. in Education (1951) • Name changed to the State College of Iowa (1961) • University Library built (1964) • Name changed to University of Northern Iowa (1967) MAUCKER

  15. John Kamerick • Sixth President, 1970 – 1983 • Resigned presidency to remain a history professor KAMERICK
