September 11, 2001 On September 11, 2001, nineteen terrorists hijacked four U.S. airliners, deliberately crashing two of the planes into two office buildings of the World Trade Center in New York City and a third plane into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. After learning of the other attacks, passengers and crew members on the fourth plane attempted to gain control of the plane, and the plane was crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania. Nearly 3000 people were killed on that day.
