INTRODUCTION Radiation is around in our every day life, whether we know about it or not. There are a lot of every day and house hold items that use radiation, and some of it you wouldn’t even expect. During this experiment, I wanted to discover what items in the classroom use radiation. My experiment was to find what everyday objects give off radioactive particles, or will respond to a Geiger counter. A Geiger counter is essential to my experiment because without it, I wouldn’t have been able to determine what objects gave off radioactive particles.
EXPERIMENT • To find out what every day objects contained radiation, I used something called a Geiger counter. A Geiger counter is an instrument that detects forms of ionizing radiation. Such radiation includes gamma rays and alpha and beta particles. To do this experiment you only need a few things. • 1.)Geiger counter • 2.)Various objects to test • These are about all you need to start this experiment. Now on to the experiment; • Step 1: When you get the Geiger counter, turn it to x1, unless you plan on testing objects that are dangerously high in radioactivity. • Step 2: Begin to slowly move the counter rod over the object that is going to be tested. • Step 3: Record the data. • That is the way to conduct this experiment, and surprise yourself with the results.
DATA • Here are my results: • Items Tested Reading On X1 • Dog tags 0-.05 • Pencil Lead .02-.05 • Lead Isotope 2.10 .05+ • Geiger Counter 0.05 • Computer Screen 0.05 • Key Board 0 • Myself 0.05 • Calculator 0.03 • CD 0.04 • The Air 0.05 • Laptop .03-.15 • Electrical Outlet .05-.075 • Winter Fresh Gum 0.025 • Although these objects give a reading, the amount actually given off is too little to be harmful.
