  3. His Life • Shakespeare was Christened on April 26, 1564. There is no record of when he was born but it is commonly believed that his birthday was April 23, 1564. The entry is in Latin and says, “Gulielmusfilius Johannes Shakespere” or, in English, “William son of John Shakspere”. Next

  4. His Life • His father was John Shakespeare. He was a glover and a leather merchant. A glover is someone who makes gloves. • His mother was Mary Arden who was a local landed heiress. This means that she inherited land from her father. • Shakespeare had four siblings that lived through childhood. Next

  5. His Life • Scholars think that Shakespeare went to grammar school starting around age six or seven even though there are no records to prove this. They think this because of his knowledge of Latin and Classical Greek. Scholars do know that he never went to university. Next

  6. His Life • Shakespeare got married on November 28, 1582 to Anne Hathaway. He was 18 years old and she was 26 years old. They had three children but one died as a child. Next

  7. His Life • Shakespeare started to establish himself as an actor and playwright around 1588. A playwright is someone who writes plays. By 1594, Shakespeare was not only acting and writing for the Lord Chamberlain’s men, but he was also a managing partner of the group as well. Next

  22. His Work • Shakespeare wrote different types of plays. These types are tragedies, comedies, and histories. • An example of a tragedy is Romeo and Juliet. • An example of a comedy is A Midsummer Night’s Dream. • An example of a history is Richard III. Next

  23. His Work • Shakespeare also wrote 154 sonnets. A sonnet is a poem that has 14 lines, a specific rhyme scheme, and uses iambic pentameter. Next

His Work • Shakespeare invented over 1700 of our common words by changing nouns into verbs, verbs into adjectives, connecting words together, adding prefixes and suffixes, and creating completely new words. • Some examples: preposterously, bashfulness, insufficiency, home-spuns, shrewishness, barky, undistinguishable Next
