  2. Introduction • In the past, the National Conference chose a national project to last two years. • In 2002, Reading is Leading was chosen as permanent national project. • Each chapter is asked to focus at least one project on promoting literacy.

  3. Questions to Ask Yourself: • Who in the community will be your target audience? • Will you need outside support? • What facilities will you need to use?

  5. Read-A-Thons Book Drives Trick-or-Treat for Books Adopt-a-School Children’s Hospital/Clinic Reading Functional Literacy Workshops Lobbying Congress Read in Nursing Homes or Senior Centers Book Festivals What Can You Do?

Chapter Project Examples • The chapters at The University of Michigan and Michigan State University held a competitive “Book Battle.” • Lyon College organized a Hogwarts Day (a Harry Potter carnival) for children from Big Brothers/Big Sisters. • Otterbein College held a bake sale and used the money to buy books for Children’s Hospital. • SUNY Buffalo organized a “Dr. Seuss is Loose” program.

  7. Chapter Project Examples • The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire created Velcro books to be given to children with special needs. • Southern Nazarene University listened to kids read at a special needs school.

  8. Chapter Project Examples • Stephens College held a “Poems and Pets” project in which they took pets from an animal shelter to a nursing home and read poetry to the residents. • Baylor University members volunteer weekly to teach Spanish-speaking Baylor housekeeping staff English. • Wichita State University held a contest in which elementary students designed a poster based on their favorite book.

Chapter Project Examples • The University of Arizona helped local Sudanese refugees learn English. • Colorado State University held a fund-raiser to benefit a library in Nicaragua. • University of the Pacific purchased and donated bilingual books to ESL children and families. • University of Pittsburgh read to children at a school for the blind.
