Monthly Maintenance: How to maintain a Compost Pile Agri-science Mr. Bailey
Materials Needed • Shovel or dull-pointed pitchfork for turning the compost pile • Two liter soda bottle for periodic watering • Temperature probe (optional) • Compost fencing or container (optional)
Why do we need to turn it? • Compost piles need to be turned over to allow decomposition • The middle of the pile heats up • materials in the middle break down faster than the materials on the outside. • Turning over the compost pile aerates the middle • This allows for a more complete breakdown of the whole compost pile.
What does the water do? • Water is needed for the survival of the organisms inside of it • Compost produces steam • Compost needs to be moistened not drowned • Too much will slow down the process of decomposition
Temperature Probe • Check the internal temperature of the compost pile • Temperature should be 135⁰ and 160⁰ F • Too cool will allow parasites to live • Few organisms decompose if too hot
Compost bin or Container • Contains the compost • Allows for easy removal • Keeps unwanted pests/animals out
Sign Up • 3-4 students for each month • Check the compost pile and turn it
