  1. AcidsFormulas and Nomenclature “My eyes! The goggles, they do nothing!” – Radioactive Man* *Contrary to a lot of media, acids are rarely, if ever, lime green in color. They can burn pretty badly though.

  2. Objectives Covered 7. C5.7A Recognize formulas for common inorganic acids, and bases formed from families I and II. 8. C5.8B, C4.2e Draw and name simple alkanes (10 carbons or less), alkenes, alkynes (6 carbons or less) and (5.7A) carboxylic acids.

  3. What is an Acid? Definition: Acids are compounds that have a bonded hydrogen that can be separated in water When a Hydrogen is part of an acid it has a positive one charge. H+ All acid formulas begin with Hydrogen

  4. Binary Acids • Binary Acids Contain Hydrogen and a single type of Nonmetal • To Name: Hydro + non-metal + ic acid - Example: HCl = Hydrochloric Acid

  5. Binary Examples HBr Hydrosulfuric Acid Hydrobromic Acid H2S HI Hydrofluoric Acid Hydroiodic Acid HF

  6. Oxy-Acids • Contain Hydrogen and a Polyatomic Ion • To name: Polyatomic ion - ate + ic + acid • Example: H3PO4 = Phosphoric Acid

  7. Oxy-Acid Examples Nitric Acid HNO3 H2SO4 Sulfuric Acid

  8. Organic Acids • Organic Acids contain a Carboxyl Group • To Name: Organic Name + oic + Acid Organic Acids Will Not Be Covered on the Quiz
