Judaism • The oldest of the Monotheistic Religions • First practiced in Southwest Asia by the Israelites • Religious book = Torah (1st 5 books of the Bible) • All Jewish people are descendants of Abraham (Founder of Judaism)
Jewish History • Believe God gave Moses the 10 Commandments for them to live by (Est 1400BC) • Would remain in God’s favor as long as they followed God’s law • 1000 B.C. King David created the Kingdom of Israel with Jerusalem being the capital
Judaism Today • Holidays: Passover, Hannukah, Rosh Hashanah (New Years), Yom Kippur (Most important) • Religious Leaders are called Rabbis
Christianity • Began in Southwest Asia (Modern Day Israel) • Jesus is the founder of Christianity • Preached a message of trusting God and repentance of sin, and God would forgive their sins • Crucified for blasphemy
Christianity • Disciples Proclaimed Jesus had risen from the grave • Began preaching that he was the Son of God Major Holidays: Christmas, Good Friday, Easter
Islam • Began on the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia in the 600’s A.D. • Followers are called Muslims • Muhammad (a prophet) is the founder of Islam
Muhammad • Believed to have heard the angel Gabrielle to preach there is only 1 God (Allah) and the Five Pillars of Faith • Within 20 years all of Arabia had accepted Islam
Islam Today • Religious Book: Quran • Every Muslim must make a pilgrimage to Mecca to pray (hajj) Holy Month is called Ramadan
