Agenda Educating and activating our fellow medical society members to build single payer support nationally through organized medicine infrastructure • How do medical society members begin to collaborate? • What tactics can be utilized successfully within medical societies? • Interactive session

  3. What counts as a medical society? • Specialty societies: ACOG, AAN, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy • Primary care societies: AAP, AAFP, ACP • Large body societies: AMA, NPA • State/local medical societies: Oregon Medical Association, Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland • Student: AMSA, AMA-MSS • Race: National Med Assoc, Natl Hispanic Med Assoc • Issue-based: PNHP, PSR, PHR, DWB, ethics, legal  • Other: American Academy of Insurance Medicine? Many have govt/legislative affairs arm that lobbies US/state congress.

  4. Society Member Collaboration • Letter to the society president (Deborah) • Resolutions to the member congress (Robert, Richard) • PNHP can supply list of members who self-identify as belonging to certain medical societies

  5. Example resolution Passed at AAFP Scientific AssemblySeptember 2011, Orlando, FL RESOLVED, That the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) make available to constituent chapters and physician members educational resource materials about various health care systems including single payer health care plans.

  6. Medical society tactics • State constituencies are good starting ground • Building caucus of state chapter delegates to strategize within society/prepare for confs • Submitting resolution to educate or advocate for single payer • Submitting workshop proposal at confs • Submitting lecture suggestions at confs

  7. Interactive session • What societies represented? • What is structure of that society? • What tactics have been attempted? • Type up list of future tactics, collaborations, producibles
