P3c - stopping distances • Task • You are a police officer preparing a presentation about stopping distances for motorists who have been convicted of dangerous driving • Your presentation needs to include: • - definitions of thinking distance, braking distance and stopping distance. • How these are affected by speed • An explanation of at least three factors that affect thinking distance. • An explanation of at least three factors that affect braking distance

Grade C Describe thinking distance as: • the distance travelled between the need for braking occurring and the brakes starting to act. Describe braking distance as: • the distance taken to stop once the brakes have been applied. Describe stopping distance as: • thinking distance + braking distance. Grade A Describe the factors which might increase thinking distance: driver tiredness, influence of alcohol or other drugs, more speed and distractions or lack of concentration. Describe the factors which might increase braking distance: road conditions – slippy, icy, wet, car conditions - bald tyres, poor brakes and more speed
