In India, Athletics is counted among the most popular forms of sports and is played extensively throughout the country. India has so far produced several eminent Athletes, who have excelled in the international arena. The Indian Athletes started playing in the international Athletic meets for the first time in 1948, when they took part in the London Olympic Games. The Indian team comprised 8 Athletes in the 1948 Olympics, out of which 6 were men and 2 women. It was also the first time that the Indian Women Athletes participated in the Olympic Games. Since the 1948 Olympic Games, the Indian Athletes have shown considerable success in various international championships. Apart from the Olympics, they have excelled in the other prestigious championships like the Asian Games, World Championships, SAF Games etc. While showing great performances in the tournaments, the Indian Athletes have also won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for India.
DhyanChand Achievements: • Won 3 gold medals in Olympic games • Awarded the PadmaBhushan in 1956
P. T. Usha Achievements: • Won silver medals in the 100 m and the 200 m events in the 1982 New Delhi Asiad • Won gold in the 400 m with a new Asian record in the Asian Track and Field Championship in Kuwait • Became the first Indian women to enter the final of an Olympics event in 1984 Los Angeles Olympics • Won five gold medals at the Asian Meet in Jakarta in 1985
Milkha Singh Achievements: • Won the 200 and 400 meters events in the 1956 Tokyo Asian Games • Won the 400 meters at the 1958 Cardiff Commonwealth Games • Broke the Olympic record for the 400 meters event while finishing fourth in the 1960 Rome Olympic Games
AbhinavBindra Achievements: • Made a junior world record score of 597/600 in 2001 Munich World Cup and won bronze • Received Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna Award in 2001 • Gold in 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games • Became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold • Won India's first individual Olympic gold medal in 2008
