To practice our communication skills with each other Starter 1 Can you work out the following expressions below? 2 Watch the clip...

Communication Skills 1 What sorts of communication problems did you notice in the clip from Fawlty Towers? 2 Imagine you walked into a hotel - how would you greet the person at the reception? 3 How would you expect to be greeted & why? 4 What type of setting is this eg a formal type of setting or informal – explain. 5 Now practice the parts with your partner eg hotel receptionist and new customer. Ensure both of you play both parts

Formal & Informal Communication 1 Give examples of people who we would communicate with informally. 2 Can we have an example please eg acted out? 3 Now make a list of all the formal settings for communication. 4 Again an example please..... A different pair this time. Writing Task: Now explain clearly the difference between formal and informal communication giving examples to show your understanding of both.

  4. How to start a Communication? With one to one communications you do not know very well you should aim to create the right feelings and reflect the setting eg if you were in an interview you would use formal language. Now think about working in the care profession eg a care home, children’s centre, nursery etc • What sorts of factors should you take into consideration before starting to communicate? • What other factors apart from words are important in communicating with clients? • There are 3 parts to a conversation think of it like a sandwich – can you name the 3 parts of the conversations?

Starter 1 State whether the following are formal or informal communication settings: A job interview A chat with a friend on the bus home from school A meeting with the Principal A day out with your Gran An appointment with a solicitor 2 A Game – Say What.....

  6. Non verbal Communication? Non verbal means without words eg body language. Pair Task Make a list with your partner of all the different ways you communicate with your body language eg which parts of the body or in which ways? • Think about the ways teachers use body language to help you. • What about your parents/ guardians – what body language do they use?

Non verbal Communication • Posture – the way you are standing or sitting • Eyes – are you looking at them? • The face – think back to our starter today – facial expressions. • Hands – gestures with hands/ arms etc • Symbols & signs – think about how death people communicate. • Angle of the head – Are you facing them? • Muscle tension - eg relaxed looking, tense or nervous? • Voice tone - low, loud, sharp, friendly, severe? • Body Movement - How you walk, sit, cross your legs, your arms etc.....

The1 – 1 Conversation (Think of a 3 part Sandwich eg a BLT!) 1 Starting the Conversation eg creating the right emotions like being friendly, relaxed or formal& interested. 2 The Middle – listening, expressing & understanding. 3 The Ending - The most suitable way to end your conversation so you leave the right emotions behind. Practice Task – Now in pairs I want you to practice a conversation between a councillor and a teenager who has issues with controlling his/ her anger. Both pupils must have a go at each role. Extension Task Now practice a conversation between an elderly patient wanting a chat at a care home and the care home manager. Q: What if anything was different between this conversation and the previous one?

  9. Group Communication skills Brainstorm- Can you make a list on the board of the essentials required to communicate effectively as a whole group – reflect on what often happens or does not happen in class discussions . Who wants to take charge for writing on the board?

Group Communication Group Communication involves some special issues which many people in this class in particular need to get to grips with! • If you are communicating in a group – listening to each other is very important as is reading body language which we will get onto next. • Group feeling – everyone should feel comfortable to contribute and communicate thus not intimidated by others. • Group leaders may be important eg a chair in a debate, a teacher to lead the class discussion or even better a pupil. • Thinking through what you are going to say eg not just blurting out the first thing that comes into your head eg organising your thoughts. • Turn Taking - every one needs the basic social skills of taking turns to speak. • The use of space – eg sitting in a circle is far more comfortable for all as we can all see each others faces.

  11. Practice Task – Group Discussion Reflecting on what we have just discussed on group conversations you are now going to practise conversations in groups of 4. You are going to discuss: Teaching & Learning at Chaucer. The rules are as follows: • 2 minutes quiet thinking time to start • Only one person speaks at a time . • When any one speaks they must put a card on the table and once all your cards have been placed down you cannot speak any more. • You cannot speak unless you put a card on the table. • No one can speak for more than one minute at any one time. NB –Preparing what you are going to say takes time and energy but it is good practice as is waiting your turn to speak. You NEED to listen to what others say as I will question you on it afterwards!

Teaching Practice... • You are all going to have a chance at playing teacher over the next few weeks on a subject of your choice and I want you to work on your body language in order to get all pupils focussed and listening to your every word. • Homework – prepare a 5 min introduction to talk to the class on a subject of your choice (as long as it is educational) showing good awareness of the importance of body language. You will not be allowed to read anything from a piece of paper so be warned!!!
