  4. The Program • Two, 2-day sessions • Rising 5th graders? • 30 spots each session • 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.?

  5. The program’s experiments • Bacteria in the Environment • Caught Dirty Handed • Limonene from Orange Peel • New experiments to-be-developed

  6. Bacteria in the Environment Students will collect an environmental swab and learn basic microscopy and staining techniques.

  8. Caught Dirty Handed A hand washing experiment Students will explore whether washing their hands really is beneficial.

  9. Limonene from Orange Peel Did you know the active ingredient in orange cleaning products is a chemical called LIMONENE? In this lab, students will extract limonene using a green, organic process used in industry.

  11. Other activities An important part of our program is educating students on possible career paths in the sciences.

  12. Other information • Lunch • Transportation • Assessments-will be performed pre-and post- program to assess what the students have learned.

  13. Continuing Efforts • This program has now run five times. • It was publicized on several news stations and in the local papers. • We received positive feedback from both the students and their leaders. The volunteers also enjoyed the experience.
