Who is John the Baptist? Son of Zechariah and Elizabeth • Zechariah was a priest and an angel told him his wife Elizabeth will be giving birth to a son. [1] • John was the first child of Zechariah and Elizabeth. • The angel identified himself as Gabriel. [2] • Zechariah wasn’t able to speak as a sign that this was a miracle from God. [3]
His birth foretold • “He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth.” [4] • “He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.” [5] Relative of Jesus • When Gabriel the angel went to and spoke with Mary to tell her that she will be pregnant with Jesus, he also said “Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child.” [6]
The birth of John the Baptist • John was going to be circumcised on the 8th day. • They wanted to name him Zechariah after his father but his mother said his name will be John. [7] • Since John’s father Zechariah could not speak, his relatives handed him a tablet to write down what he would like his son’s name to be and he wrote “John.” [8] • After Zechariah wrote down John he was able to speak again.
The Life and Ministry of John the Baptist John was a Preacher • John the Baptist was born before Jesus and prepared for the coming of Jesus by telling others about him. • John the Baptist preached in the Desert of Judea. [9] • John the Baptist encouraged others to repent of their sins because “the kingdom of Heaven is near.” [10] • John the Baptist was foretold about in the Book of Isaiah “A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” [11]
After people confessed their sins they were baptized in the Jordon River. [12] • John the Baptist lived out in the desert wearing clothing made of camels hair and eating locusts and wild honey. [13]
John the Baptist and Jesus • John the Baptist said that he baptizes with water for repentance but that Jesus will come and baptize with the Holy Spirit. [14] • Jesus traveled from Nazareth and was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordon River. [15] • While Jesus was coming up from the water during the baptism, Heaven opened up and the Holy Spirit came onto Jesus like a dove. [16] • A voice came from Heaven and said “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” [17]
John the Baptist was suspected of being Christ, Elijah, and a prophet. [18] • King Herod the Tetrarch believed Jesus was John the Baptist risen from the dead because he had beheaded John the Baptist. [19] • John the Baptist was known as a very charismatic man who had the ability to motivate people with his words and speeches. [20] • The area where John the Baptist preached was described as a “hot, dry, rough, barren wilderness of Judah.” [21]
The Death of John of Baptist • John the Baptist was Beheaded • John the Baptist was beheaded by King Herod. • King Herod married his brother Philip’s wife Herodias and John the Baptist told him it was not lawful. [22] • The daughter of Herodias danced for King Herod and King Herod’s guests. Since they were all pleased King Herod told the daughter of Herodias that she could have up to half of his kingdom. [23]
The daughter of Herodias asked her mother what she should request and Herodias persuaded her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a platter and so he wouldn’t look bad in front of his guests, King Herod had John the Baptist beheaded. [24] • The marriage was unlawful because the husband was still alive when Herodias left him for Herod the Tetrarch. • The marriage was unlawful in Levite law. [25]
