  5. John 7: Let’s Get Started!!! After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. John 7:1

  6. John 7 • The Gospel of John is alternating between Judea and Galilee • John 1: Judea • John 2:1-12: Galilee • John 2:13- 4:2 : Jerusalem (Judea) • John 4:3 – 54: Galilee • John 5: Jerusalem (Judea) • John 6: Galilee • John 7: Begins in Galilee, travels to Jerusalem

  7. John 7 • Vs. 1: The King James Version uses the word “Jewry” • The original Greek word used is Ioudaia (ee-oo-dah'-yah) • In every other translation I looked at, it was translated Judea • Either is correct! • Judea was where Jerusalem and the Jewish leaders were that sought to kill Jesus • What did Jesus Have to Fear? • Could He be setting an example for us?

  8. John 7 • Vs. 2 Now the Jew's feast of tabernacles was at hand. • The Jews observed (and still do) 7 Feasts of Moses • Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Pentecost, Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, Feast of Tabernacles

John 7 • They also celebrated (and still do) two additional feasts: • Purim • Chanukah (Hanukah) • The Feast of Tabernacles • Lasted 7 days • Commemorated how God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt and led them through the wilderness to the promised land • They were commanded to build booths or tabernacles and live in them for the 7 days of the feast (Leviticus 23:38-43 • Apparently they were not to build them “too well”

John 7 • Notice in verse 2 the terminology: • “Now THE JEW’S Feast of Tabernacles was at hand” • What significance is there to John saying it was the Jew’s Feast, rather than “The Lord’s” Feast of Tabernacles? • The Jews had corrupted the holy days and feasts • They followed rituals, but they did not know the Lord

John 7 Verses 3-5 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.  For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.  For neither did his brethren believe in him.

John 7 • Who are “His Brethren” that verse 3 refers to? • Most likely Mary’s other sons • How many half-brothers and sisters did Jesus have? • At least 4 brothers, (James, Joses, Simon, Judas) and 2 sisters (Matthew 13:55, 56) • His Brothers ask him to go up to Judea to the feast • The reason they give is that Jesus’ disciples might see the works (or miracles) that He did. • They encourage him to do so that He might make a name for Himself • We know from verse 5 that they (His Brethren) did not believe in him • What was their motivation?

  13. John 7 • In asking Jesus to go up to the feast, were Jesus’ brethren missing something? • In order to keep the law, Jesus had to go up to the feast! Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty: Deuteronomy 16:16

John 7 • Jesus’ Response 6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway(s) ready.  7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.  8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet full come.  9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

John 7 • Jesus responded that His time was not yet come: • He often responded in this way • He was keenly aware that everything He did was on a schedule • What did He mean when he said to His brethren: “your time is always ready”? • He was saying that it didn’t really matter when they went…. There was nothing riding on their decision to go or not to go. • The world did not hate them as it hated Him…because He told them the truth about how evil they were!

John 7 10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.  11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?  12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.  13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

  17. John 7 • Vs. 10: When his brethren were gone up…. • The trip to Jerusalem for the Feast would have been much like a procession • Even the journey would be considered part of the celebration • Keep in mind they would have their “booths” with them that they were to live in for the week • This was, for the Jews, the most festive feast that there was. • Jesus chooses to go up “incognito” as it were • Notice that the Jews were expecting Him to be there • At this time Jesus had quite a bit of notoriety

John 7 • In verse 12, we see that the people in Jerusalem had differing opinions about Jesus • Some said “He was a good man” • Others said “He deceived the people” • How could it be that the people would have such differing opinions? • Why do people have such different opinions about things today? • Take the political scene in our country today • To me, my political views are clear in my mind, and I’m pretty passionate about them • On the other hand, there are many that believe very differently than I do and are just as passionate! • Why the difference?

  19. John 7 • Vs. 13: “No man spake openly of Him for fear of the Jews”. • Why the fear of the Jews? • What fear do we have today for not speaking openly of Him? The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. Proverbs 29:25

  20. John 7 • Vs. 14-15 14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.  15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

  21. John 7 • “In the midst of the feast…” • Remember it was a 7 day feast followed by a “special” Sabbath • Jesus’ appearance at the temple would have occurred about the 4th day • Why do you think He waited until then to appear? • The Temple was THE TEMPLE in Jerusalem…. The most revered place in all of the Jewish religion! • This is quite a contrast……Jesus came to the feast in secret, now teaches openly! • What is meant by the statement: And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? • (It must have been quite a lesson that Jesus taught!

John 7 16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.  17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.  18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.  19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

John 7 • Vs. 16: • Notice the word “doctrine” • didachē : means instruction • Jesus does not claim the instruction as His own, but ascribes it to the one (God) who had sent Him • Vs. 17: Jesus gives US some advice here regarding how to be certain regarding the things of God • “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself”. • What is Jesus saying here? • By doing God’s will, we will get internal assurance from God that the doctrine is correct and is pleasing to Him

John 7 • Vs. 18: Jesus testifies that He was not speaking of Himself and was seeking no glory for Himself, but of the one that sent Him • He uses this fact to authenticate that what he was saying was true • Vs. 19: Things get interesting! • The Jews prided themselves on keeping the law of Moses • So much so that, to violate that law was punishable by death! • Yet Jesus knew that they were seeking to kill Him because they said He healed on the Sabbath

John 7 • Vs. 20 20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? • Who are the people here who are telling Jesus he had a devil? • They are probably the “pilgrims”, those who had traveled to Jerusalem for the feast • They are definitely not the insiders, for they in fact were trying to kill him! (John 5:16)

John 7 • Vs. 21-24 21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.  22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.  23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?  24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

  27. John 7 • What miracle is Jesus referring to here as the “one work” that they all marveled at? • The Healing of the man (Sick for 38 years) at the pool of Bethesda • After curing him, Jesus told him to take up his bed and walk • The Jews, seeing him carrying his bed on the Sabbath, accused him of breaking the law • ………Rather than rejoicing with him over his healing!!! • Regarding circumcision, the requirement of the law to circumcise on the 8th day superseded the law of doing no servile work on the Sabbath • Jesus points out that what he had done was of greater benefit than circumcision, which was allowed, he had made a man whole who was sick for 38 years • Yet they sought to kill him for it!

  28. John 7 • Vs. 24: Jesus says judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. • What does He mean? • Are we sometimes guilty of the same thing the Pharisee’s were guilty of? • Can you think of some examples?

  29. John 7 • Verses 25-27 25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?  26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?  27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

  30. John 7 • “Some of them of Jerusalem” were the residents, not the pilgrims that had traveled there for the feast • They obviously were aware of the plot to kill Jesus • Notice how they begin to speculate! • Here he is speaking in the temple boldly and they are just letting him do it! • Maybe they’ve come to the conclusion that He IS the Messiah! • But wait a minute….. We know where this man comes from, when Messiah comes, no man will know where he comes from • They knew his place of residence, and that seems to disqualify him from being the Christ

  31. John 7 • Jesus’ response: 28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.  29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. • What is Jesus saying to them?

  32. John 7 • Vs. 30-31 30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.  31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

  33. John 7 • The fact that they sought to capture Jesus seems to indicate they took what He said as a claim to be the Messiah • Was Jesus’ escape miraculous? • His hour was not yet come! • What about us….do we have God’s hand of protection on us until “an appointed time? • Read Psalm 91 • Is it too farfetched to think that one day we may be faced with giving our lives for what we believe? • Philippians 1:21: For me to live is Christ…to die is gain!

  34. John 7 • Vs. 32: The temple police are sent to arrest Jesus • We’ll see how they didn’t come back for four days…and then empty handed! • Vs. 33-34 33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.  34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

  35. John 7 • Even though they don’t understand it…Jesus tells them that he only has a little while left with them • (He knows He will go to the cross in about 6 months!) • What does he mean when he tells them: you will seek me, and shall not find me? (Hint…they still are seeking him). • He could have been referring to the time to come when the temple would be destroyed and many Jews would be slaughtered • Vs. 35-36: It’s obvious that the Jews had no idea what he was talking about • They assumed he was talking about going to the Jews that were now living in other lands or to the Gentiles

  36. John 7 • Vs. 37-38 37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.  38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

  37. John 7 • The Eighth day of the feast was the greatest day of the feast • It was the “closing ceremony” if you will of the feast • On the other days, they would make sacrifices for other pagan nations • On the Eighth day, they made sacrifices for the nation of Israel only • They abstained from any manual that day • They finished reading the Law, which was commenced at the beginning of the feast • The Priests would go to the Pool of Siloam, draw water from the pool, then in a procession go back to the temple, and pour it on the sacrifice

  38. John 7 • As they did these rituals, they would sing the words of Isaiah 12:3: “With joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of Salvation”, • Understanding all that was going on, What Jesus said is more significant! • To the Jews…. The water was symbolic of salvation through the Messiah that would come! • The Thirst that Jesus referred to was the thirst after salvation! • How ironic that the very Messiah that they said they longed for was standing in their midst! • The reference to the “belly” is a reference to the heart! • Jesus had referred specifically to “living water” before, Where? • What was Jesus referring to here?

  39. John 7 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

  40. John 7 • Note the setting here….. It was in the most “Religious” place in the whole world! • Jesus didn’t say come to the temple, or come to the priest or rabbi or even the Baptist minister! • He said “Come to Me!” • I believe that in every person’s heart there is a thirst, a longing or hunger that only JESUS can satisfy! • Have you come to Him?

  41. John 7 • Vs. 40-43 40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.  41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?  42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?  43 So there was a division among the people because of him.

  42. John 7 • Let the controversy begin!! • Some said he was “The Prophet” • Who was that? • The prophet that they expected to proceed the Messiah! (John the Baptist has already been on the scene!) • Others said He was the Christ (good guess!) • Did they know their prophecy? • Shall Christ come out of Galilee? • As a matter of fact He did (Nazareth, Matthew 2:23) • Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of Bethlehem where David was • Jesus fit that description as well!

  43. John 7 • Vs. 44-46 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.  45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?  46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.  47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

  44. John 7 • Remember back in vs. 32 when the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him • Here they are, four days later and empty handed! • Oh some of them tried….. “But no man laid hands on Him” • When they return to the Pharisees and Chief Priests, what excuse did the officers give for not bringing Him back? • Never a man spake like this man! • Were they deceived also?

  45. John 7 • Vs. 48-49 48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?  49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. • Who are the “rulers” that are referred to here? • The members of the Sanhedrin

  46. John 7 • The rulers (Sanhedrin) were supposed to have control over the religious rites and doctrines of the nation • The Pharisees were the sect that held wealth, office and power • The basic question was: Have any of them believed? • Notice their comment: “but this people that knoweth not the law are cursed” • What was their problem? • What about Nicodemus?

  47. John 7 • Vs. 50-51  50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)  51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? • It has been 18 months since Nicodemus came to Jesus by night

  48. John 7 • In John 3 Nicodemus was in midnight • He came to Jesus by night with his questions • In John 7, Nicodemus is in twilight…he questions the other rulers • Has he made it all the way to full belief in Jesus? • In John 19 we will see that He “Has daylight in his soul!” • Was Nicodemus’ question a valid question? • The Law REQUIRED that justice be done and gave every man the right to claim a fair and impartial trial! (Lev. 19:15-16, Exodus 23:1-2, Deut. 19:15, 18). • The Jews, who claimed to follow the law to the letter blatantly ignored their own laws to condemn Jesus

  49. John 7  52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. • Verse 52 • Notice the response to Nicodemus: “Art thou also of Galilee?” • What does that mean? • It was an insult of the highest order! • Imagine the worst thing someone could call you….that was what they did to Nicodemus!

  50. John 7 • Let’s look at their claim: • Search and look, for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. • Was their claim legitimate? • Jonah (of Gath-hepher) and even probably Elijah (of Thisbe) had arisen out of Galilee • Capernaum: (Kapernaoum) was the city of Nahum the prophet • Maybe even Elisha, Hosea and Amos had arisen out of Galilee • The Galilean ministry was prophesied in Isaiah 9:1-2 • At best they had not done their homework • At worst they were just plain dishonest!
