Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) • Protect the health and safety of Canadian society • Reunification of family members • Facilitate the flow of people and goods including visitors, students and temporary workers • Fulfill Canada’s international obligations with respect to refugees
Protect the health and safety of Canadian society • Keep foreign criminals, war/human right violators and people who are a security risk from entering Canada and if they do enter find them arrest them and deport them. • Immigration Officers are peace officers under the Act and have the right to arrest and detain individuals who are in violation.
Reunification of family members • Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor immediate family members like spouses, children under 21, parents • Have to sign an agreement with the government that they will be responsible for the person from 1 to 10 years
Facilitate the flow of people and goods including visitors, students and temporary workers • Entry of 1000s of foreign students (pay 3x tuition of Cdn students), workers and visitors at land, sea and air port of entries
Fulfill Canada’s international obligations with respect to refugees • to offer safe haven to persons with a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group, as well as those at risk of torture or cruel and unusual treatment or punishment; • Accepted overseas and in Canada • Must be outside their home country
